From
street scenes to landscapes, he tried to capture
the very essence of an interesting time in American
history. Many of his paintings seem to carry
a feeling of loneliness or emptiness, and this
is quite understandable when one considers the
multitude of problems that plagued America during
this time.
From the Depression through World War II, Hopper's
scenes seem to echo the feelings of hopelessness
and despair that existed at the time. Not all
of Hopper's works exhibited such a grim outlook,
however. The landscape scene used here as a
background is indicative of many of his paintings.
Simple and colorful outdoor scenes with a clarity
and spirit all their own. No despair here, only
the interpretation and expression of the American
landscape.
